The Philippines is participating in an international youth amateur radio event organized by young amateur radio operators around the world called Meme Appreciation Month from June 15 to August 15, 2023. Now in its second year as “Meme Appreciation Month 2: Electric Boogaloo,” the event started in 2022 when Ben Riehl (VA4BEN), a young ham from Canada, filed an application for a special event callsign, which, to his surprise, was approved.
In 2022, Meme Appreciation Month ran from June 25 to August 5 with special event callsigns from Canada, the United States, and France operated by young amateur radio operators in these countries. The callsigns were: VB4LIGMA, the callsign VA4BEN applied for; VB3YEET, VC9CATGIRL, VC3RIKROLL, VC3DEEZ, VB3HARAMBE, and VB6DANK were callsigns registered by other young amateur radio operators in Canada looking to join in on the fun; K3K was the special event callsign for the US; TM1SSOU, TM0WO, and TM0RBIN were special event callsigns from France. Meme Appreciation Month is all about doing fun things on air. As the name suggests, it is also an event for amateur radio operators to appreciate memes and all the times they have made people laugh. Meme Appreciation Month caught the attention and interest of amateur radio operators around the world.
In this year’s edition of the event, there are more special event callsigns on air and more countries participating, with countries such as the UK and the Netherlands also having special event callsigns. There are multiple special event callsigns from the US for this year. This year also features an awards program based on the number of QSOs with the various special event callsigns.
The Philippines is participating in Meme Appreciation Month this year with DZ2NUTS, a special event callsign registered by Hans Bosshard (DV1YKL). DZ2NUTS is active from June 15 to August 15, 2023, on various modes such as SSB, FT8, and SSTV. According to DV1YKL, DZ2NUTS is active mostly on FT8 for 40 m, 20 m, 17 m, and 15 m due to QRM, but DZ2NUTS may also be heard on SSB, SSTV, RTTY, Feld Hell, or JS8CALL. For DU1, DZ2NUTS may be active on 2 m and 70 cm FM. For satellite operators, DZ2NUTS may be heard on satellites as well. DZ2NUTS will QSL preferably by mail, but it is also possible to request via Club Log. DZ2NUTS will also be uploading logs to QRZ and LOTW.
